7 Things You Should Be Doing Every Spring to Help Your Lawn's Health.

March is here and we are starting to see signs of spring. As your yard starts to thaw there are a few things that are necessary to do to have your yard ready for new spring growth. If you are not interested in following the below steps, yard cleanup is something we specialize in at Elkhorn Lawn & Landscape.

1) Remove Debris & Holiday Decorations

Winter storms leave a messy path of broken branches and sticks. It is important to clean up and remove all larger debris before raking up left over leaves and smaller sticks. It is also important to empty any potted plants that didn’t make it through the winter or that were forgotten in the fall. Lastly, remove any holiday decorations that might be creeping around. Christmas lights and garlands tend to be the biggest culprits.

2) Break out the Rake

A good rake can go a long way. Make sure to rake out your garden beds and lawn. Then compost the debris or dispose of the leaves. Once your lawn is clear of leaves and debris, you’ll start to notice your yard will start to perk up and turn green.

3) Fertilize

As we are coming out of winter in Utah, your grass probably looks tired and tan. Fertilizer is a way to “jump start” your lawn and give it the nutrients it needs to help its roots grow strong and leaves green. Working with a professional to make sure you are using the right fertilizer and quantity is important to making sure the fertilizer used will fit your needs best.

4) Prune & Trim

Now is the time to give your shrubs and trees a “haircut”. Spring is the best time to trim back any branches and shape shrubs.

5) Edge the Garden & Lawn Beds

Grass grows naturally into flowerbeds and over sidewalks leaving a messy unruly edge. This step is what creates a crisp line between the two and helps to keep your mulch contained. Special tools and the proper technique can make all the difference.

6) Mulching

After you have cleaned up and cleared out your flower beds, it’s important to add mulch to create a weed barrier prevent soil erosion. It will also give your beds a finished look. We highly recommend adding a preventative layer between the ground and the mulch to prevent growth of seedlings and weeds that might be lurking in or under the soil from coming to the surface.

The type of mulch comes down to personal preference. We are happy to advise and provide a solution that works best in your budget and needs.

7) Finish Projects & Develop a Planting Plan
